More About This Classic...
Original UK Jaguar E-type series 1.5 fixed-head coupe, built for performance by a sports car enthusiast. Following the iconic Series 1 4.2, saw the launch of the E-type Series 2, introducing a number of aesthetic and mechanical changes to the industry-leading British sports car of the 1960s. To bridge the two series, Jaguar built a Series 1 with Series 2 features, these included open headlamps, redesigned door cards, and center console rocker switches, to name a few easily notable factors, these models became known as Series 1 1/2 or Series 1.5.
The accompanying history file highlights the E-type sold September 1981 described as a shell, to Mr Wadlow, who intended to fully restore the Jaguar E-type. In Wadlow’s ownership for the next 20 years, the E-type began and completed its metalwork phase of restoration, finished in red oxide rust preventer.
Wadlow inquired with several classic Jaguar restoration professionals about finishing the E-type to a performance specification. Toying with the idea of fitting an earlier 3.8 XK straight six, Weber carburetors, and other performance lead options. But as it does, life got in the way and other commitments kept the restoration from progressing.
In 2000 the E-type was sold described, at the time, as ‘dismantled’, to the current owner based in Kent. The owner took on the project with the vision of building the Coupe into a true driver's car with superb performance.
Having taken delivery of the E-type, the owner reached out to a local Jaguar restoring to help build his vision. The restorer, based in Biggin Hill, Kent, took the car on early in 2002, having the shell taken back to bare metal for a fresh and clean start. Once blasted it was clear what work had been undertaken by the previous owner, bodywork sections such as new inner and outer sills, footwell panels, rear arches, front and rear floors, and replacement Series 1 bonnet.
Benefiting from this previous work, requiring only minor fabrication, the E-type was prepped and painted in an industry favourited Jaguar Opalescent Gunmetal with Black trim. Following this milestone, the current owner steered the E-type restoration to produce the ideal driving Series 1 E-type classic Jaguar. Pulling together his vision of what makes the best Jaguar E-type.
Over the last 15 years, the owner has continued to build his specification, seeing the following projects and upgrades undertaken:
- Full stripped 3.8 ltr XK, rebored to 4 ltr
- Customised trim and Cobra seats
- Triple Weber carburettors
- ITG performance air filter
- Adjustable Gaz shock absorbers
- 6-branch sports exhaust system
- Wilwood high-performance brake
- Electric power steering
